Describe and analyze the building’s floor plan. How does it organize human use of the space (program) and what does it tell us about the architectural work as a whole?

Your textbook is a good place to start to find a building that interests you. You may also choose landscapes or un built projects, but please consult with me before proceeding.

Your research essay must answer ONE of the following questions in thorough detail.

You may take these questions as a starting point and expand on them as necessary to develop an insightful, historical,and aesthetic commentary on your building.

1.Describe and analyze the system of construction and how it contributes to understanding the building as a whole. You are encouraged to consider one or more of the following issues, such as the relationships between the history of building technology and society, the architect’s theories(or other’s theories) about construction, the history of labor and manufacturing, issues of craft, how the construction relates to structural expression and aesthetics, and so forth.

2.Describe and analyze an aspect of the building’s ornamentation. How does the ornament relate to the overall aesthetic appearance of the building?

What might the style, method of manufacture, and subject matter of the ornamentation tell us about the building within its historical context?

How does the ornament relate to the architect’s theoriesor other architectural ideas at that time and place?

3.Describe and analyze the building’s floor plan. How does it organize human use of the space (program) and what does it tell us about the architectural work as a whole?

You are encouraged to consider one or more of the following issues: How are social ideals or customs revealed to us through the plan?

How does the arrangement of the plan relate to historical ideas about architectural space?

How does the plan contribute to the overall aesthetic expression of the building?How does the floor plan relate to the architect’s theories or other architectural ideas of the time?
