In the Argumentation Essay, you will choose a speech, explore it, and make interesting claims about the author’s overall message or point. Offer a rich perspective on that point it and whether or not you think it would be convincing to other readers. The goal is to think critically about the speech, take a position on it, and avoid summarizing it. Requirements

  • 2 pages (five paragraphs)
  • MLA formatting
  • Three-point thesis statement
  • 1 source (include at least one quote from the speech in each paragraph. Quotes should never exceed two typed lines.)
  • Include a Works Cited page (for the speech itself)
  • Paragraph 1 (Intro): Identify the title of the speech and summarize it. Include any background information you find important. Write a three-point thesis that makes 3 points about the overall message of the speech. Sample Thesis: “Greta Thunberg’s United Nation’s speech, “Our House is on Fire,” argues that nations have ignored the climate crisis by discrediting political leaders for their neglect, condemning their lack of responsibility, and imposing guilt and shame on them.” Please see the Sample Thesis Statements at the bottom of this page.
  • Paragraph 2: Discuss the first topic in your thesis, and then link it to how the speaker conveys the overall message to the audience. Quote at least one supporting detail to develop your perspective.
  • Paragraph 3: Discuss the second topic in your thesis, and then link it to the strongest example or metaphor that is used to convey the overall message. Describe how it enhances the speech. Quote at least one supporting detail to develop your perspective.
  • Paragraph 4: Discuss the third topic in your thesis, and then address one or two potential counterarguments to your view of the speech. Quote at least one supporting detail that strengthens your point.
  • Paragraph 5: (Conclusion) In your conclusion, include a “thesis restatement,” and then state whether the speech is effective. Did the speaker effectively supports the position and purpose of the speech?
