One of the dilemmas studying US history is our ability to explain how a society that values freedom could support the institution of slavery as well as other forms of coercion including our treatments of Native Americans, the denial of women property rights, the forced take-over of Mexican land, and the denial of workers the right to organize and strike. For this assignment, you will need to address the interaction of liberty and coercion in American history from the time of the American Revolution until the end of the Civil War.
Explain the strength of slavery in the US during this time period and at least TWO other forms of coercion in the US from 1776 to 1865. You will need to use Jones, Greenberg and Page, the lectures, and additional scholarly resources but be sure to cite (do not use Wikipedia or similar sources)
Using Native Americans, choose 2 cases (i.e. 2 different tribes) that illustrate how they resisted to the expansion of the United States to the West. In your answer, be sure to discuss the specific tribes, regions, which groups they were resisting, and the forms of resistance.
