There are key federal departments and agencies that oversee different segments of health care. The United States’ Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) is the primary federal agency involved with health care. Its mission is to protect the health of all Americans and to provide essential human services, especially to those least able to help themselves. It comprises multiple major operating divisions, including those that make up the Public Health Service. Three of these divisions are the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
