Description

students will define and explain, in no less than 350 words, the role which transference and countertransference play in group therapy. What are Yalom’s main points about transference in group settings? What might happen, according to Irvin D. Yalom, if group therapists fail to acknowledge and understand transference in group settings? What is Yalom’s recommendation for working through transference in group work? What role does countertransference play in the process and what is the ethical dilemma a counselor faces when they become aware of their own countertransference?

Also, students will discuss how the Christian faith might mitigate the understanding of the processes of transference and countertransference. For example, how might a counselor who is a Christian cope when group members are of a different faith or are atheists are vocal about their negative views of Christianity?

Finally, students should also discuss their reactions to Yalom’s suggestions on how to effectively respond to negative feedback from group members.
