imagine that you are on the jury and all the other jurists, like the judge,
are consequential. Reaching the best verdict, according to your fellow
jury members, is a matter of totting up how much suffering would result
from releasing Hubert and comparing it with the suffering that would
result from condemning him. They point out that a riot – in which plenty
of innocents would probably be lynched in any case – is a greater ‘evil’
(see 1 in the previous activity) than hanging just one person.
