ASHA position policy recognizes that General American English is a dialect. It is the most spoken of the recognized dialects in this country. Current state of the art practice, however, reflects that practitioners in speech language pathology do not refer to GAE in an explicit manner, mostly recognizing the other varying dialects when we practice.
