- Weber, The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism
- Weber readings from Social Theory (essay must cover all assigned readings)
- Freud, Civilization and Its Discontents
- Du Bois, Black Reconstruction in America
Whichever reading(s) you choose, you only need to cover the assigned sections as listed on the syllabus. (Same as the weekly readings.)
Your essay should be a critical review of that particular reading. You should summarize the main points of each section of the reading—in your own words. In the last paragraph, provide a critical analysis of the reading. How is it helpful for understanding the world we live in today? What are some limitations of the work, or of the author’s perspective?
