Setting boundaries is essential in any helping profession. How would you enforce your established boundary in the following scenario?
You have a client, Jed, that is consistently late to your sessions/meetings. You explain upon each occurrence that he will have reduced time due to the tardiness. When you attempt to wrap up at the scheduled end, he regularly tries to discuss “just one more thing,” which often leaves you little time to prepare for your next client. You decided after the third occurrence that you will no longer see him for his scheduled appointment if he is late. You informed him of this and added that he will be held to the late cancel/no show policy if he is not on time in the future. Today he has walked in 12 minutes after your scheduled time and insists he had a flat tire even though he left early, which is why he is late.
Post a short video of yourself responding to this client in a way that professionally enforces your stated boundary. Be sure to state your rationale to the client but stand firm in your decision. This is an opportunity to showcase your case management style! Bring someone else in to play Jed so that the presence of a back and forth dialog is apparent.
