Face-Negotiation Theory
1. Based upon what you’ve learned about Afghanistan, is the culture in dividualistic or collectivistic? Does the society have a large or small power distance? What
clues do you have?
2. Do you see yourself as having more of an independent or an interde-
pendent self? Does this go with the low of your culture, or are you swimming
against the tide?
3. What face concern (self-face, other-face, mutual-face) does your religious faith,
political ideology, or personal set of values embrace? To what extent is the face work
you do in your relationships with others consistent with that face concern?
4. What style of conlict management would you use with the group member who
did poor work? Do you think that your response is based on your culture, self-
construal, gender, or status? What other factors affect your decision?
