    • Health and fitness (chapter 12)
    1. Provide a few examples of professions in this area and decide on a specific profession within this area to find out more about and present on.
    2. What level of education is required?
    3. What graduate school opportunities exist?

    Each person should find two graduate schools and include the following: how long is the program (credits and semesters)? What perquisite coursework is required? What other admission criteria exists?

    1. What licensure or certification is required/ recommended?
    2. Is there opportunity for further specialization?
    3. What types of populations would this profession work with?
    4. What types of setting would you find this profession (hospital, outpatient, school, college, fitness center, etc)?
    5. What are the necessary characteristics for someone to be successful in this profession (include at least 5- these should come from you interview and job searches)?
    6. What professional organizations should one belong to?
    7. What is the outlook for this profession? (is there a shortage/high demand?)
    8. What is the average salary? Nationally? Locally?
    9. Job Search: each group member should find at least two job postings
    10. where did you search for jobs? Specific (ie: indeed.com)

     

    1. find commonalities between the job postings (personality traits, other skills, etc). Identify common “key words”
    2. Talking to a professional:
    3. With your partner(s) come up with at least 4 open ended questions that you would ask an established professional to find out more about the job (can be related to education, job satisfaction, setting, etc)
    4. Reach out to an established professional and ask to conduct an informational interview him or her. Ask your 4 (or more) questions. This can be done over the phone, via email, or in person (whatever works best for you and the professional). This can be done anytime between now and the final. Be upfront about how much time you anticipate it to take. Follow-up with a written “thank you”. Ask before using the person’s name and place of employment in the presentation.
    5. Present with a PowerPoint (60 points- breakdown above)
    6. tell us what you found out for points 1 and 2 (a-i)- include references
    7. provide a quick overview of the job postings you found- embed links
    8. tell us who you interviewed and the results (names can be confidential or changed if necessary)
    9. one person should upload the PowerPoint prior to presenting.

     

    1. You will be assigned one of our guest speakers to interview and create an introduction to the class. You will be expected to set up a mutually agreeable time and platform to talk to the speaker (phone, Facetime, Zoom, etc). Find out some of their background to develop a 2-minute introduction on the day they speak. You should try to learn about the speaker ahead of the meeting via company website or LinkedIn. (10 points)

    Dr. Gabarda is the Senior Director of Clinical Training & Development at UPMC Health Plan where she is responsible for designing, scaling, and evaluating evidence-based training, quality assurance, and health behavior change interventions for digital, telephonic, and in-person health coaching and care management.

    Dr. Gabarda’s work focuses on setting a standard of excellence to positively impact health and increase patient/member engagement and activation through coaching and use of Motivational Interviewing. She is passionate about combining coaching and behavior change science to empower individuals to live their best and healthiest lives. Her team provides training for coaches, clinicians and leadership through the Health Coach Academy by UPMC.

     

    Education: Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science from Slippery Rock University, Master of Exercise Science from Slippery Rock University, Master of Public Health from Walden University, and Doctorate of Education from University of Pittsburgh.
