How was concern for patient/family, nurse, and system well-being guiding the situation?

Recall a nursing situation from practice that bothered you. If you are a first-year student who has not had any clinical experiences, think of a situation in your personal life. It could be yesterday, last week, or, if you have been in practice for a while, years ago.

Consider the following questions in relation to that situation:

1. How was concern for patient/family, nurse, and system well-being guiding the situation?

2. Other than this well-being, toward “what” were the actions in the situation oriented? For example, to what extent was short-term efficiency or expediency driving the situation? Available resources and staffing?

3. What do your answers to these questions suggest about what different actions might have been taken?
