The study aims to understand the underrepresentation of Black cowboys in rodeo. Specifically, it seeks to understand factors that have fundamentally contributed to the inexistence of black cowboys in professional rodeo. Additionally, the aim of filling these research gaps is to provide more information that could be useful in addressing the lack of black cowboys in professional rodeo and engaging/attracting them to the sport by identifying the barriers to their professional development—identifying barriers, limitations, structures, and access to a professional rodeo career for aspiring black cowboys—arriving at conclusions of what has led successful cowboys to get to the professional level and understand how to navigate the process/system of the premiere levels. To determine the main obstacles for black cowboys to get to the premiere levels of rodeo competition in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association and Professional Bull Riders.
Research questions
1. How have Black cowboys competing at the premiere rodeo level arrived at that level successfully?
2. What is the experience of the successful Black rodeo cowboy moving up through the levels of the minor leagues?
3. What are the perceptions of Black rodeo cowboys competing in the minor leagues of the barriers and opportunities they face in advancing to the premiere series?
