Write a 750–1,000-word essay describing the “hot spots” in your city or town.
Define crime mapping and explain its usefulness to police officials and patrol officers. Describe the areas where crime rates are the highest and the areas where crime rates are the lowest. Describe all of the crime factors you can find: economic demographics, known types of crime, most common crime, police or security presence, community activities and involvement, etc.
Discuss the hot spot theories of crime and the time, days of the week, or other factors that may explain why crime is centered on the hot spots you have discovered.
In your research for this assignment, use official hot spot maps produced by your local police or sheriff’s department (no commercial sites) or interview a police officer or sheriff’s deputy from the crime analysis unit at their station and ask to see their electronic crime trend information. An abstract is not required.
