What kind of people do you think will be reading the text?

What is the main point the writer is trying to make? Where can you find this? How does it connect to the title of the piece?

What is the function or purpose of each paragraph? How does each paragraph connect to the next one? Give examples of the language used to show this.

What does the text look like? Are there any pictures/ graphics? How is it organised on the page?

Is this formal or informal? Are sentences simple or complex? What tense is used most frequently? Write down some examples.

Are there any words or phrases that are commonly used in a specific genre? Or that link the writing to a particular subject? Would most people know the majority of the words used or are some only used by experts in the area being discussed?

How is the argument constructed? Are the claims valid? Are there any clues which show the values, thoughts and biases of the author? Is the argument credible? If so, why?
