On page 42 and 43 of “A Concise Guide to Clinical Trials”, Turner states “The essence of a physician’s work is to treat every patient as an individual case, . . . In contrast, the essence of conducting a clinical trial is to implement a study protocol such that all subjects are (ideally) treated in exactly the same manner, the only difference being which drug treatment they receive.”
