Clinical case conceptualization

/ Young Adult

In this reflection you are inventing an adolescent client. The teen or young adult should be between twelve and 19 years old. Use the following categories.

Edit out all unnecessary phrases, casual writing, and non-professional language.

Intake

Describe the client’s situation. Include: age, gender identity, ethnic/ cultural identity, family situation, economic status, cognitive ability, emotional expression, and other individual, family, social, and cultural factors.

Presenting Problem

Explain the problem. What is the problem, why is it a problem, how does the problem manifest? Is there a diagnosis? (not necessary)

Problem described by the parents or guardians – what is their perspective?

Problem described by the teen – what is his/her perspective?

Treatment Approach

What are two treatment goals you prioritize for this adolescent?

What psychological theory/ psychotherapeutic approach (lens) will you use to understand/ conceptualize your client and his/her situation? Why is this theory appropriate to work with adolescents/ young adults?

What therapeutic approaches will you use with your client? Why are these therapy techniques/ process appropriate to work with a teen/ young adult?

What special training did you obtain to work with this client? What competencies are essential?

What might be one personal issue to emerge for you while working with your client and his /her care givers?
