Assignment Plan:
Choose 1 of the 3 scenarios presented above to serve as the focus of your essay. From each of the scenario, please identify 3 themes/issue (i.e. 1 for each of law, ethics and values) that you will discuss in depth using the guidelines below. Indeed, each scenario highlights a lot of issues, but be mindful of the word count and your ability to discuss the issues with sufficient depth. :
Introduction: (indicative length ~200 words)
Introduce your essay by clearly identifying the 3 major points that you have chosen to highlight on your essay. Also make it clear how each point corresponds to each area of the module (i.e. which one is relating to law, to ethics and to values).

Case scenario A, a disabled 15 year-old Ana who suffer from severe cerebral palsy. As well as Ana is wheelchair-bound, fed through a tube in her stomach and still wears nappies. Her mother Ula a 45 yea-old who gives constant care to Ana……… “Mental Capacity Act 2005” but please explain that this Law does not apply for children who are 16 below however a child needs to be assessed whether they have enough understanding to make their own decision, benefits and risk of for their treatment- this is termed “Gillick competence”.

This is the guidelines for the body of essay.
Body of the Essay: (indicative length ~1,600 words)

1. Discuss each of the themes identified using the relevant resources presented during the lecture and seminars as well as additional relevant resources you read.

2. Explore and discuss the role of the nurse around these issues. Relate the specific standards of the NMC code that is relevant to the issues identified.

3. Identify and discuss the legislations that are pertinent to the identified issues. This should also include any statutory reporting duties and other applicable legal principles discussed during the lectures and seminars.

4. Offer a solution from a nursing perspective. Discuss how you might prevent or mitigate the identified issues should you encounter this situation in practice.

 

Additional points:
The references should include academic books and textbooks; peer reviewed publications from the academic journals; and reports by national and international organizations.

▪ In order to demonstrate the breadth and depth of your reading it is anticipated that you would provide a substantial number of citations (minimum 15-20 references).

▪ Be mindful of the word count. It is expected that within the text, you will not be able to identify all the issues within the scenario. There will be overlaps but it is important to focus on the identified 3 issues (1 for each area – law, ethics and values).

▪ Follow Harvard referencing standards – both in writing in-text citation and creating the reference list.
